The CERN leave year runs from 1st October to 30 September of the following year.
The following days are official holidays: 1st January, Good Friday, Easter Monday, 1st May, Ascension Day, Whit Monday, "Jeûne Genevois", 24th December, 25th December, and 26th December. CERN official holidays 2018.
Any absence without prior authorisation and/or justification exposes members of the personnel to disciplinary action.
In the event of absence for medical reasons, the supervisor and the Group Secretariat must be notified immediately. A medical certificate (see the sample template for illness/accident certificate) must be provided for any absence of more than three (3) consecutive days. Where a member has taken uncertified sick leave totalling seven (7) calendar days within a leave year, he must provide a medical certificate for any further sick leave during the same year; if he fails to do so, any such absence will be deducted from his annual leave or considered as special unpaid leave if he has used up his annual leave entitlement.
1. Medical examination or treatment
According to HR's guidelines, in case a member is unable to come to his place of work owing to a medical treatment, the following should be done:
a) For an absence less than 2 hours, the (oral or written) agreement of the supervisor is necessary and sufficient.
b) For an absence of more than 2 hours, a sick leave should be registered in EDH by the Group Secretariat. It may take the form of a sick leave with medical certificate. See template
2. Illness of a close relative
Members of the personnel are granted with 7 days/year to assist a sick close relative (child, husband, wife, parents, parents-in-law, brother, sister). For such absence, it is mandatory to provide a medical certificate. Please see templates below:
