CERN Accelerator Control room (CCC)  and Data Center (CCR)

The IN section is in charge of the specification, procurement, integration tests, operational installation and support of high-performance and high-availability server platforms and storage systems of the Accelerator data center, as well as operator workstations and video distribution in the CERN control room. 

CERN Accelerator Embedded systems and Technical consoles

The IN section is in charge of the specification, procurement, integration tests, operational installation and support of the Accelerator embedded systems in VMEbus, cPCI and PICMG1.3 form factors, as well as the technical consoles (PCs) distributed across the complete CERN Accelerator chain, from the LINA2 up to the LHC.

CERN Accelerator Field buses Infrastructure​

The IN section is responsible for the deployment and operational support of the MIL-1553, WorldFIP, General Machine Timing (GMT) and White Rabbit field buses used for long-distance and sometimes radiation tolerant control of systems such as the LHC power converters, the LHC quench protection system, the LHC cryogenics system and the control of the Injector complex power converters.

Operating Systems, System Administration and Virtualization

The IN selection is responsible for the selection, installation and administration of the Linux and Windows operating systems running on the above mentioned computing platforms. The section is also in charge of the configuration the complete Virtualization infrastructure, including virtual machines for developers and Terminal servers.

The IN section is directly responsible for the management of users accounts and Accelerator computing security aspects in the context of CNIC.

​Infrastructure Asset Management, Geolocation and Diagnostics

The IN section manages the entire life cycle of the Accelerator control system hardware asset (hardware boards, crates, processors, etc.) from the procurement until the final dismantlement.

The IN section plays a key role in the specification and development of all low-level remote diagnostic software required to operate the CERN control system hardware infrastructure, including amongst others SNMP, AMT and IPMI in the future. The GIS portal system offering infrastructure geolocation and on-line documentation is also part of the IN portfolio.​

Enterprise Tools for Documentation, Issues tracking and Software repositories

The IN section provides support for the procurement, licensing, installation and configuration of the suite of seamlessly integrated enterprise tools for documentation creation and sharing (Wiki) and for issues tracking (Jira).

The IN section also provides infrastructure support for software repositories (SVN, GIT).

In the light of its mission, the IN section develops strong partnerships with hardware industry partners in the CERN Member states, as well as with all equipment groups of the Accelerator sector, the CERN IT department and the CERN finance and procurement service.
